The Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is found in sub-Saharan Africa and also in northern Iran. It is the fastest terrestrial mammal with a speed range up to 71 mph. The adult Cheetah weighs from 88 to 140 pounds. The cats usually live alone although sometimes males will travel with two or three others. The cheetah can communicate by marking trees, termite mounds, and shrubs with their waste. The world's population of cheetah ranges from 9,000-12,000 animals. Namibia houses the largest population, estimated at 2,500. In Hindi cheetah means "spotted one."
