The Great-Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is found throughout the forests of North, Central, and South America. Great Horned Owls are large owls about 18 to 25 inches long and have a wingspan between 35-60 inches. Within its range Bubo virginianus can be found in dense woodlands of hardwoods and conifers, along cliffs and rocky canyons, and in forest openings. The Great-Horned Owl is swift and graceful in flight, moving with stiff, steady wing beats, with wings held mostly below horizontal; flight speeds up to 40mph have been recorded. The owl is primarily semi-nocturnal to nocturnal, but will occasionally hunt in the daytime.
