The Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) can be found in Sub-Saharan parts of Africa, especially in the Nile river valley. It has got brownish colour. It is a 5 feet tall, 13 feet long and weighing up to 31/2 tons. In weight, the hippo is the second largest land mammal. It is typically a slate brown color to muddy brown, with pink and purplish hues. The eyes and nostrils protrude, allowing the animal to see and breathe while otherwise submerged in the water. The preferred habitat of this species is deep water with adjacent reed beds and grasslands. The name hippopotamus is derived from the Greek words meaning “river horse.”
